Alternative #1: "Machine" or Computer Translation
This method uses computer software to translate the client's
English site. This technology is typically simple
for the client to deploy and maintain. However, there are
significant drawbacks to using this method of site translation.
First, the translations are often inadequate and inaccurate,
since no human translators are involved in the process. Second,
all-important graphics and images are typically not translated
using this approach. Third, this method cannot discern between
areas of the site that should not be translated, such as names,
addresses and proper nouns. And most problematic, this method

What is machine translation? Does it have limitations? |
|
Machine translation -- also known as "computer translation" -- utilizes computer software to translate text from a primary language (such as English) into a secondary (or "alternate") language. It is often the least expensive method of traditional text translation. While the pricing may seem attractive at first glance, machine translation features several significant drawbacks -- especially when applied to websites. For most public and private sector applications, it is an impractical solution.
In many industries, such as banking and telecommunications, machines are equipped to keep up with -- and even outperform -- human beings. Translation, however, is not one of those arenas. Machine translations are vastly inferior in quality, compared to content translated by professional human translators. Machine translation provides literal, word-for-word translations while struggling to account for the nuances of syntax and context. This means machine translation often fails to recognize that many words in the English language have multiple meanings. (For example: In English, a "kid" may be a child or a baby goat, depending on the context of the text. When translating English to Spanish, which regionalism is best? |
|
This issue often confuses many non-Spanish speakers. In our
1,000+ person-years of translation experience, MotionPoint has realized that there are almost as many regionalisms of Spanish as there are Spanish-speaking countries. Each regionalism has words, preferences, phrases and slang that are unique to its region.
Choosing the proper Spanish regionalism in which to translate depends on your target market. For instance: If the Spanish-speaking constituents or consumers in your areas are predominantly Mexican, then the regionalism you should choose for translation must appeal to Hispanics of Mexican origin.
But what if your target market is the entire U.S.? Your company should choose a type of Spanish translation that MotionPoint calls "universal" or "non-confrontational" Spanish. Is translation as easy as looking up words in a dictionary? |

No. If it were, anyone could be a professional, certified translator like those employed by MotionPoint. Translation is a complex, attention-intensive task. Vocabulary in both languages is essential. Just as important, however, is a translator's ability to meticulously capture the same nuanced tone and context as the text he or she is translating. Word choice does not hinge on a quick glance in a dictionary; it depends on the content and context of the English message.
For instance: The words "medicine" and "pharmaceutical" have similar meanings in English -- both represent products designed to improve our health and well-being. But depending on the context in which they are used, these words can have very different connotations. If you were translating a paragraph relating to a hospital and wanted the tone to be warm and humane, you'd probably choose the word "medicine," which implies wellness and recovery.

How do you assure consistency of word choice? |

When you translate English to Spanish, the text becomes longer. How do you assure that the Spanish doesn't "break" my site? |

Spanish content, on average, tends to be 25 to 30 percent longer than its English counterpart. (For instance: A 100-word paragraph in English will likely be 130 words or more in Spanish.) We call this unavoidable phenomenon "word growth." It's a vexing problem for most translation companies, since most web pages are designed around a specific number of words. Increasing the number of words on the page -- as would be the case when translating English to Spanish -- often distorts the visual presentation, destroying the alignment, look and feel of the site.

Our technology continually monitors your site, searching for new content. When it identifies new content, it immediately schedules it for translation. Other companies approach website translation by creating duplicate, alternate-language "mirror" websites. While this is a complex, time-consuming and costly endeavor, the larger challenge lies in ensuring that the English and Spanish sites remain in-sync at all times. Where is the
translated-language website hosted? Can I host the website? |

First, it's important to recognize that there's no need to actually host a second or alternate "website" ... because there's no second website to host. Instead of creating a "mirror" site, MotionPoint's TransMotion® technology "layers" the
translated content atop your English web pages. The TransMotion® software can be hosted at your facility or at our secure facility. Many of our clients appreciate our "turn-key" solution, where we host the system. However, you always have the option of hosting our solution on your servers.
Who is better suited to host? The answer depends on a variety of factors, including infrastructure, bandwidth, security and your company's preference. After you speak with a member of our sales team, he or she will evaluate your site and make an appropriate recommendation.

What happens if the MotionPoint servers quit running? How stable is your platform? |

MotionPoint’s servers are extremely stable. In fact, we guarantee 99.9% uptime. The only time our servers are ever shut down is for scheduled maintenance which periodically occurs early Sunday mornings. If, in the unlikely event that our servers were to shut down, your English site would continue to function normally. |

Do you have any plans if your servers are damaged by a catastrophe? |

All of MotionPoint’s technologies are housed in two redundant Tier-1 facilities to ensure that any catastrophic failure is quickly resolved. Our Tier 1 facilities are managed by Navisite and have self-contained power generation and bio-metric security systems in place. |

What is One-Link Deployment®? |

One-Link Deployment® is the name of MotionPoint's unique deployment process. When a site is
alternate-language enabled using our TransMotion® technology, a single
"Language" link must to be added to its navigation bar for the technology to function. Adding this single link to your organization's English site is the primary work your team will do during the entire website translation process.
The "Language" link is a single line of javascript code, which we provide to your IT department, along with insertion instructions. No other company makes
